We installed brand new LED lighting for Wirral Waters, a regeneration project organiser in Birkenhead, to transform the ‘Left Bank of the River Mersey’. The client contacted us regarding their latest residential project, Miller’s Quay, which required the gym area on the ground floor to be completely renovated and fitted out with the containment for the electrical installation for power, lighting and mechanical services.
This was a medium-sized electrical project and we completed it over 2-3 weeks, within the initial deadline. As this was a complex job, we were in close communication with the client throughout the project duration to ensure our work aligned with their vision. The nature of a project like this usually springs from differences to the original plans, as new ideas develop throughout the process of the job. Throughout the project, we had to react and be flexible to solve any issues as they appeared.
This job was mainly concerned with customer-facing amenities such as lights and outlets. As this is a public space for residents, it was elected to try and bypass physical switching as much as possible, so PIR sensors were employed to operate the lights as someone walks into the room thus eliminating the need for much user interaction and to give a more modern effect. This seems to be the new norm since the restrictions were outlined during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We were also tasked with wiring data cables for WiFi boosters and a camera security system throughout, the termination of all circuits into a fuse board to control all the circuits wired into the gym space, and a full test of the installation.
We were brought in to do the installation of the plans drawn up by an external electrical designer. Our skills were utilised in the expert understanding and carrying out of the orders put in front of us. In this instance, it concerned two main areas; namely, the front of the house (or customer-facing areas such as the gym floor, toilets and changing area) and the back of the house (the areas for the engineers). As all the containment was to be featured as part of the decor it was paramount that it was carried out to the highest standard. Once this was achieved we could move onto pulling all the cables through and getting the circuits operational.
During the project, we came across alterations and limitations with the initial plans that we had to overcome. A good example of this would be when following the plans outlined for the lighting, it appeared that they would cross over with the air conditioning units that were proposed. This was caught before any installations and we were able to bypass any collisions and relocate our lighting and containment to a location that would meet the designers intentions whilst not obstructing any other installations.
